We would encourage you to arrive at 9:30! Join us for coffee and community before the gathering begins.
Sanctuary KIDS is available on Sundays during the gathering for children ages infant-5th grade. If you’d like to learn more about Sanctuary KIDS, click here. If you’d like to pre-register your family before attending on a Sunday, click here (this will make the initial check in process go much faster).
As a portable church that meets in an art center with art exhibitions that change every three months, we do our best to position signage in a way that–first and foremost–protects the art displayed throughout the facility. We believe that artistic expression is a gift from God. However, in an effort to guard and guide our congregation, The Sanctuary (with the permission of the IAC) reserves the right to cover any art that we deem is a distraction from our mission, vision, and values.
The Sanctuary is adding a Sunday Gathering on September 13th
Beginning Sunday, September 13—our three-year anniversary—we will be moving to two Sunday gatherings at 9am and 11am at the Indy Art Center.
This decision is rooted, first and foremost, in the long-term health of our church. While we know it will stretch us, we believe that over time, two gatherings will create a more sustainable rhythm for people in every stage of life to participate in and contribute to what we call Life at The Sanctuary.
As we step into this next chapter, we’re inviting you to prayerfully consider how you might be part of what God is doing—whether that’s joining a team, inviting someone new, or committing to pray fervently for our church.
Two Gatherings FAQ
It’s always been our heart to move at “the pace of grace.” Meaning, we never want to make important decisions reactively and urgently when they can be made prayerfully and intentionally. Waiting until September allows us to cast vision, give leaders space to process and ask questions, and time to our staff to build up teams so we can effectively serve in an increased capacity this Fall.
At this time, the only limiting factor to attending a specific gathering is our Sanctuary KIDS ministry. Because we can only offer KIDS at the 9am, we’d invite you to consider serving at the 9am and attending the 11am if you’re willing to serve with our Sanctuary KIDS.
This is dependent upon your preferences. Connect with your ministry overseer to determine if there’s a specific gathering you’d prefer to attend and serve at, or if you’re flexible to serve/attend both on a week-to-week basis.
Because our two gatherings will be in the auditorium this time around, we don’t anticipate capacity being an issue immediately. Hopefully, this allows you freedom to discern which gathering to attend and which gathering to serve.
There are a few factors we think about when it comes to the “health” of our church.
Pace: From the very beginning, we’ve longed to practice a “slow-down spirituality.” We want our Sunday gatherings to not reflect the efficient consumerism of our culture that has pervaded the Church, leading people to “get in and get out” in a timely, hour-long fashion. Church isn’t an assembly line, it’s a family. Moving to two gatherings stretches the amount of time our teams will have to prepare and execute Sunday gatherings which–we believe–will create more margin for us to move slower throughout the morning.
Presence: Because the church is a family, we desire to be present to one another via prayer and conversation. In our current, portable set-up, many of our leaders are on a tight schedule to: transform the art center into a church, host a gathering, and transform the church back into an art center. Extending to two gatherings allows the in-between time of our gatherings–as 9am’ers are exiting and 11am’ers are arriving–to be a relaxed, organic time of communion because the “next” thing will be something our teams are already prepared for.
People: This decision was made with our people at the forefront. We recognize that–in the short-term–this decision may cause some disruption or disorientation because we’ve grown accustomed to the regular rhythm of a 10am Sunday gathering. But–when we think long-term–we see our people continuing to practice the way of Jesus in our neighborhoods, all across the city, which invariably includes witnessing and extending invitations to our neighbors. Therefore, in anticipation of the growth we believe we’ll continue to experience, two gatherings give us options to choose from as we extend those invitations, serve, and attend. This also–for the first time in the history of our church–gives our Sanctuary KIDS leaders a sustainable pathway to both serving and attending and feeling incorporated into all aspects of our Sunday gathering. And finally, two gatherings creates more opportunities for more individuals in our church family to get involved and to feel actively a part of contributing to our Sunday gatherings in a variety of ways.

If you serve on a team, it’d be most helpful if you’d communicate directly with your ministry overseer. Your questions are welcome and they will help us sharpen our strategy as we prepare to begin an additional gathering in the Fall.
